


Advocate FMA Razzak has issued a formal legal notice to authorities demanding an immediate end to salt water extraction within the Paikgachha Municipal area to protect the environment and public health.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Paikgachha Press Club on Saturday morning. Razzak, a local resident and human rights activist, stated that the extraction of salt water for shrimp farming is causing severe socio-economic and environmental damage to the coastal township.
The legal notice, sent via registered post on February 26, 2026, gives relevant authorities seven days to take action against illegal salt water extractors. The notice cites.
The National Shrimp Policy 2008, Which regulates saline water usage. High Court Writ Petition (No. 57/10). Restricting salt water in specific agricultural and residential zones.
The Paikgachha Upazila Parishad’s prior decision to prohibit salt water within the first-class municipality. Razzak highlighted that unscrupulous businessmen are allegedly damaging WAPDA dams at Shibati and Boyra to install pipes for shrimp enclosures.
Salt is corroding government buildings and private homes. Severe damage to local flora and fauna. A growing shortage of fresh drinking water, leading to an increase in waterborne and skin diseases. Significant damage to non-agricultural land and loss of government revenue.
The notice was sent to the Municipal Administrator, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board (Paubo), and the Officer-in-Charge of Paikgachha Police Station. Copies were also forwarded to the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment.
Advocate Razzak warned that if the authorities fail to act within the stipulated seven days, he will seek intervention from the higher courts to safeguard the rights of Paikgachha residents.
