At least 20 people were injured in a violent clash between two rival factions of the opposition BNP’s youth wing, Jubo Dal, over the control of a passenger bus counter in Lakshmipur town. The incident took place on Wednesday night (October 15) in the Jhumur and Motka Mosque areas of the town.
Among the injured are Md. Jahangir Alam, Abdul Kader, Mizan Molla, Farhad, Shuvo, Rakib, Md. Dipu, Rafi, Ratul, Shipu, and Naeem Hossain, along with several others. They received treatment at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, while Jahangir, who sustained a head injury, was later transferred to Noakhali General Hospital. Eyewitnesses said the clash stemmed from a long-standing rivalry between Tarek and Jahangir, both vying for the position of general secretary of Ward-10 Jubo Dal under Lakshmipur municipality. The situation escalated when tension erupted over ticket sales at the Jhumur counters of Shahi and Jonaki Paribahan, two bus companies serving the Chattogram route.
Tarek, who is in charge of the Shahi counter, reportedly had an altercation with Jahangir’s supporters when the latter brought his own followers to the scene in support of Jonaki Paribahan. The conflict quickly turned violent, spreading later to the nearby Motka Mosque area, where repeated clashes occurred between the two groups. One of the injured, Mizan Molla, a supporter of Jahangir, claimed that their group was attacked around 8:30 PM by Tarek and his followers while they were in the Jhumur area.
Following the incident, District Jubo Dal President Abdul Alim Humayun and General Secretary Syed Rashidul Hasan Linkon visited the injured at the hospital. Humayun acknowledged that both Jahangir and Tarek are candidates for the ward general secretary post, but stated that the central committee has yet to finalize the appointment. He confirmed that internal disciplinary actions will be taken against those responsible. Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Sadar Hospital, Dr. Arup Pal, confirmed that 16 injured individuals had been treated at the facility.
Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Mannaaf said that the police responded quickly to bring the situation under control. However, no written complaint has been filed by either party as of yet.
