British telecoms firm Vodafone and US group AST SpaceMobile have selected Germany as the operational base for their joint venture, SatCo.
First announced in March, SatCo's primary objective is to enhance high-speed connectivity across remote areas of Europe. The venture's strategy involves utilizing technology from Vodafone and AST to provide mobile services directly from satellites to network providers.
This move is intended to "further strengthen Europe's digital sovereignty" and benefit European citizens, businesses, and public sector organizations.
SatCo specifically aims to ensure "ubiquitous mobile broadband in underserved areas" and provide crucial support for emergency services and disaster relief agencies. This joint effort directly targets the market currently dominated by Elon Musk's Starlink internet system.
A commercial launch of the new satellite connectivity service is planned for 2026.
