In celebration of National Livestock Week 2025, free veterinary treatment and vaccination services took place at Gazipur Agricultural University on Thursday, November 20.
During this event, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital was bustling with farmers and animal enthusiasts. The Vice-Chancellor of Gazipur Agricultural University, Professor Dr. GKM Mostafizur Rahman, served as the chief guest for the program's opening session, which was conducted in two parts. The Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Professor Dr. Anup Kumar Talukder, led the program, while the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. M. Mainul Haque, and Treasurer, Professor Dr. Md. Shafiul Islam Afrad, attended as special guests. Also in attendance were University Registrar Md. Abdullah Mridha, Proctor Professor Dr. Mohammad Saiful Alam, along with faculty directors, students, staff, and employees.
At the start of the program, the Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the Reception and Information Desk of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This new desk is expected to streamline patient registration, provide medical information, store documents, and enhance follow-up services, making them quicker, easier, and more user-friendly.
The program was facilitated by the Associate Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Professor Dr. Jibon Chandra Das, while the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Professor Dr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, gave the welcome address. Following this, other invited guests shared their remarks.
During his speech, the Vice-Chancellor remarked, "Since animals cannot communicate, the value of animal doctors is significantly greater than that of human doctors. The free treatment and vaccination initiative not only safeguards animals but also plays a crucial role in disease prevention at the farm level and the advancement of the livestock industry." He expressed his strong aspiration to transform this veterinary hospital into the best in the country. After his speech, he went to different veterinary activity sites. Later, the teachers and intern students from the university's veterinary faculty sincerely offered diagnoses for cattle and pet diseases, medical advice, deworming, vitamins, and essential medications. Additionally, various preventive vaccinations were administered. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the service providers, a total of 65 cows, 105 goats-sheep, 225 poultry-chickens, 23 cats, 12 dogs, 13 pigeons, and 8 pet birds received services in just one day.
Over the past year, 1351 different types of animals have been treated at this hospital, and 97 farmers have received free treatment. This program, driven by a sense of human responsibility towards animals, brings relief to farmers and the general public. It is also seen as the start of a new era in the university's veterinary services. Notably, for the first time in the country, it was celebrated in Gazipur Agricultural University as part of the national Livestock Week celebration.
