Bangladesh secured a historic six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I on Monday, chasing down 183 runs—their highest-ever successful run chase on home soil.
Tawhid Hridoy led the charge with an unbeaten 51 off 27 balls, silencing critics after a poor showing in the recent ODI series. He was ably supported by Shamim Hossain, who smashed a quickfire 31* off just 13 deliveries to wrap up the win with 12 balls to spare.
New Zealand’s Strong Start
Opting to bat first, New Zealand posted 182 for 6. Half-centuries from Dane Cleaver (51) and Katene Clarke (51) set a solid foundation, while stand-in captain Nick Kelly added a brisk 39. However, a mid-innings wobble against Bangladesh’s spinners, led by Rishad Hossain (2-32), prevented the visitors from crossing the 200-run mark.
The Chase
Bangladesh's response started slowly, with captain Litton Das (21) and Tanzid Hasan (20) struggling to find timing. The momentum shifted in the 12th over when Hridoy and Parvez Hossain Emon (28 off 14) took on Ish Sodhi, taking 18 runs from the over.
The game broke wide open in the 17th over bowled by Matthew Fisher. The young pacer conceded 25 runs, including two no-balls and a wide, as Shamim and Hridoy dismantled the attack.
Turning Point
While New Zealand looked comfortable at 61 for 1 in the powerplay, Rishad Hossain’s double strike to remove both set openers changed the complexion of the game. Cleaver’s decision not to review an LBW shout proved costly, as replays suggested the ball was missing the stumps.
With this win, Bangladesh takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
