The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reinstated Najmul Hossain Shanto as the Test captain. Shanto will lead the team through the entirety of the ongoing 2025-2027 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
The 27-year-old had recently stepped down from the Test role, citing difficulty in managing three separate captains for the national team. However, the BCB decided to bring him back, prioritizing "continuity in leadership."
Shanto initially took over the role in 2023 and has led Bangladesh in 14 Tests, securing four wins, including a notable 2-0 series sweep in Pakistan in August 2024.
His captaincy officially resumes with the two-match Test series against Ireland, starting November 11 in Sylhet (these matches are not part of the WTC).
BCB president Aminul Islam praised Shanto's "composure, commitment and a deep understanding of Test cricket," confirming the board's faith in his leadership for the new WTC cycle.
Bangladesh currently sits seventh on the WTC points table, yet to register a win in the current cycle after two matches against Sri Lanka.
