Manchester City stepped up the Premier League title race with a gritty 2–1 home win over Newcastle United on Saturday, cutting the gap to leaders Arsenal to two points.
Nico O’Reilly scored twice in the first half to secure a vital win for Pep Guardiola’s side. City then held firm after the break to claim three points that keep the pressure firmly on Arsenal.
City struck first in the 14th minute when O’Reilly finished a strong move started by Omar Marmoush. Newcastle equalised through Lewis Hall’s deflected effort, but O’Reilly restored City’s lead in the 27th minute, heading in a cross from Erling Haaland.
The hosts defended resolutely in the second half, with Haaland contributing at both ends. Guardiola called the win “massive” as City moved to 56 points from 27 matches.
Arsenal remain top on 58 points from the same number of games but face a tough test away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Aston Villa and Chelsea Slip Aston Villa saw their slim title hopes dented after a 1–1 home draw with Leeds United. Anton Stach’s fine free kick put Leeds ahead before substitute Tammy Abraham scored late to rescue a point.
Villa sit on 51 points from 27 games.
Chelsea also dropped points, drawing 1–1 at home against relegation-threatened Burnley. Joao Pedro gave Chelsea the lead, but a second yellow card for Wesley Fofana reduced the hosts to 10 men. Burnley equalised in stoppage time through Zian Flemming.
Despite moving above Manchester United into fourth on goal difference, Chelsea have now lost 19 points from winning positions this season.
At Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion won 2–0 as James Milner made his 654th Premier League appearance, breaking the long-standing record held by Gareth Barry.
At the bottom end, West Ham United drew 0–0 with AFC Bournemouth and stayed in 18th place. They remain two points behind Nottingham Forest, who host Liverpool on Sunday.
