Concerns about reports of microplastics in some toothpaste products have led many people to ask whether teeth can be cleaned without toothpaste. Dental experts say fluoride toothpaste remains the safest and most effective choice for daily oral care. However a few household ingredients may be used occasionally when toothpaste is unavailable.

Baking soda can help remove surface stains from tea, coffee, and food. Use a small amount with water to form a paste, but avoid frequent use because it may wear down tooth enamel.

Coconut oil is commonly used for oil pulling. Swishing one tablespoon in the mouth for several minutes before brushing may help reduce bad breath and support oral hygiene, although evidence of broader benefits is limited.

Salt has long been used as a traditional tooth cleaner. While it may help reduce some bacteria, regular use can damage enamel and irritate the gums.

Lemon and salt are sometimes used to remove stains, but lemon's high acidity can erode tooth enamel. Dentists do not recommend using this mixture regularly.

Apple cider vinegar is another popular home remedy. If diluted and used occasionally, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water afterward, as its acidity can harm teeth.

Olive oil may also be used for oil pulling to support oral hygiene, but there is no strong scientific evidence that it whitens teeth.

Natural remedies can support oral care in limited situations, but they are not a replacement for fluoride toothpaste. Dentists recommend brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, maintaining regular dental checkups, and seeking professional advice for ongoing oral health concerns.
