The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has rescheduled the verdict in the Chankharpul massacre case to January 26. The case involves the killing of six people during the July-August mass uprising.
A three-member judicial panel, led by ICT-1 Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, announced the new date on Tuesday (January 20) morning. The tribunal stated that the postponement was necessary as the full judgment was not yet ready for delivery.
This trial marks a significant milestone as the first case involving law enforcement personnel to reach the verdict stage at the ICT following the 2024 uprising. It is also the second overall verdict related to the July-August massacres.
The case centers on the events of August 5, 2024, when six individuals—including student Shahriar Khan Anas—were killed in police firing in the Chankharpul area of Dhaka. Eight individuals are accused in the case, including former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and several other high-ranking police officials. Of the eight, four are currently in custody, while the remaining four, including the former commissioner, are being tried in absentia.
