Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir has said that future traffic management must be technology-based, as modern urban management is not possible without smart traffic systems.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a day-long workshop titled “Urban Traffic Management in Dhaka: Challenges, Innovations and Directions for Progress” at the Police Staff College in Mirpur on Wednesday (March 11).

The IGP said Bangladesh is experiencing rapid urbanisation. With the growing number of vehicles, expansion of the urban economy and increased movement of people, traffic management has become a major challenge. He stressed that all relevant agencies must work together to address the issue.

He also said the Prime Minister has already instructed authorities to take effective steps to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka.

Addressing police officers, the IGP noted that many citizens first interact with the police through traffic personnel. A traffic sergeant on duty does more than regulate vehicles—he represents the state’s law-enforcement system. Therefore, professionalism, behaviour and integrity are essential as they shape public perception of the police.

The workshop aimed to develop practical policy recommendations and action plans to improve traffic management in Dhaka Metropolitan City.

Participants discussed the current situation and key challenges, including enforcement of traffic laws, development of public transport, improving bus route management, integrating rickshaws and other non-motorised transport, addressing illegal parking and footpath occupation, strengthening coordination among relevant agencies, improving pedestrian safety, and raising public awareness.

Officials at the workshop emphasised the need for practical recommendations and coordinated initiatives to improve traffic management. Discussions highlighted the importance of technology-based traffic systems, reforms in public transport, stronger law enforcement and better coordination among government agencies.

Speakers expressed hope that the workshop’s recommendations would contribute to improving traffic management and urban transport planning in Dhaka in the future.
