Prime Minister Tarique Rahman officially adorned newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir with his new rank badge on Wednesday afternoon.
The ceremony took place at the Cabinet Division office in the Bangladesh Secretariat. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Home Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury were also in attendance.
Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, previously the head of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN), was appointed to the top police post via a Ministry of Home Affairs notification on Tuesday.
A member of the 15th BCS (Police) cadre, Fakir’s career saw significant turbulence during the previous administration. He was initially dismissed for political reasons under the Awami League government and later sent into compulsory retirement.
Following the change in governance on August 5, 2024, he was reinstated to his original rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) through a legal process. His career trajectory accelerated shortly thereafter, leading to a promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and his eventual appointment as the chief of Bangladesh Police.
