People from all walks of life gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday to pay humble tribute to the heroes of the 1952 Language Movement. Since the early hours of February 21, a steady stream of citizens, political leaders, and cultural activists has transformed the area into a sea of floral tributes and solidarity.
The commemorations began at 12:01 AM when President Mohammad Shahabuddin placed a wreath at the altar. He was followed at 12:08 AM by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and members of the cabinet. Following the state tribute, wreaths were also laid on behalf of the BNP and the Zia family.
In a significant moment, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition, led the 11-party alliance in paying respects. He was joined by Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam.
The judiciary was represented by Chief Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury and judges of the Appellate Division. On behalf of the armed forces, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan paid their respects. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan also led a delegation from the university.
The Shaheed Minar area resonated with the slogans of student organizations, including the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Chhatra Dal, and Chhatra Union. Major political entities such as the NCP, Gono Odhikar Parishad, NDM, and CPB were present alongside social organizations like July Oikya and July Mancha.
As the morning progressed, the atmosphere turned into one of solemn reflection. Thousands of ordinary citizens, often walking barefoot and singing “Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano,” formed long queues to place flowers, reaffirming their commitment to the spirit of the language martyrs and the values of the 2024 uprising.
