Cameroonian President Paul Biya, at age 92 and the world's oldest serving ruler, has secured an eighth term in office following the final vote results announced by the Constitutional Council.
Biya won with 53.66% of the vote, while his former ally, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, secured 35.19%. The victory sets Biya up to potentially remain in power until he is nearly 100.
The announcement comes amidst a tense political climate. The main opposition challenger, who had also claimed victory, reported gunfire near his home in the northern city of Garoua shortly after the results, claiming two civilians were killed. Opposition protests and clashes with security forces have been reported since partial results suggested a Biya victory in the October 12 vote, with the opposition alleging irregularities.
The government has yet to comment on the result and has previously dismissed claims of irregularities.
