A 21-year-old construction worker died from a venomous snakebite on Thursday afternoon, highlighting critical gaps in emergency care at local health facilities.
Samrat Hossain, a mason’s assistant and the sole breadwinner for his family, was bitten while working in the Golapnagar Bangalpara area of Bheramara Upazila. After suddenly falling ill, he and his family discovered the bite mark.
As the venom spread, Samrat was rushed to the Bheramara Upazila Health Complex. However, the facility lacked snakebite treatment options, causing a fatal delay. He was urgently transferred to Kushtia General Hospital but tragically passed away while undergoing treatment.
Samrat, the eldest son of Samirul Islam from Kargi Para, leaves behind a 21-year-old wife who is six months pregnant. His sudden death has devastated the community, as his family relied entirely on his daily wages.
Bheramara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jahedur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating that an unnatural death case has been filed based on eyewitness accounts and official medical reports from Kushtia General Hospital.
