A husband and wife were killed and three other people were seriously injured after being electrocuted while fishing in a pond in Pabna's Ataikula area on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred in South Kuchiamora village under Pabna Sadar Upazila.
The deceased were identified as Shobdul Pramanik, 35, son of Chhadek Pramanik of Kaijuri Sripur village under Ataikula Police Station, and his wife, Asha Khatun, 25, daughter of Abul Chowkidar of North Kuchiamora village.
According to Ataikula Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mojibur Rahman, Shobdul had arrived at his in-laws' house two days earlier. A water pump powered by electricity was being used to drain water from a pond, with an electrical wire suspended on a bamboo pole. At some point, the wire snapped and fell into the pond, electrifying the water without anyone noticing.
Around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Shobdul, his wife, and several others entered the pond to catch fish. They were electrocuted after coming into contact with the electrified water. Family members and local residents rescued the victims and pulled them to safety, but Shobdul and Asha died shortly afterward.
The three injured victims were admitted to Pabna General Hospital for treatment. Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
