Bangladesh endured a crushing innings-and-85-run defeat to Zimbabwe in the first Test in Harare, marking their first innings loss to the African side in 25 years.
The two teams first met in Test cricket in 2001, when Bangladesh lost by an innings in Bulawayo. Although Bangladesh had suffered seven more Test defeats against Zimbabwe since then, none had come by an innings until Tuesday's comprehensive loss.
Bangladesh's batting collapse in the opening innings proved decisive. After electing to bat, the visitors were bowled out for just 140 despite a promising 77-run partnership between Najmul Hossain and Mominul Haque following the early loss of both openers.
Once that stand was broken, Bangladesh's batting crumbled, losing their final eight wickets for just 27 runs. Zimbabwe's pace attack, led by Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani and Newman Nyamhuri, consistently exploited pace and bounce, forcing several edges behind the wicket.
Zimbabwe capitalized on the opportunity with a commanding first-innings total of 410. Innocent Kaia scored an impressive 140, while Craig Ervine and Brian Bennett added half-centuries to help the hosts establish a commanding 270-run lead.
Bangladesh failed to mount a meaningful response in the second innings, where all 10 dismissals came via catches. Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 34, while his 61-run fourth-wicket partnership with Mominul Haque was the visitors' best stand. No Bangladesh batter reached a half-century as the team was dismissed for 185, handing Zimbabwe victory inside three days.
The defeat is a significant setback for Bangladesh, who had entered the match in strong form after winning four of their previous five Test matches.
Bangladesh's next Test assignment will come in August, when they travel to Australia for a challenging series against the hosts.
