Pixar's "Toy Story 5" dominates the weekend box office.

Pixar’s animated blockbuster Toy Story 5 continued its box office dominance this weekend, easily defeating Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated DC superhero film Supergirl.

In its second week the Toy Story 5 retained the top spot earning $70 million domestically and pushing its global total to a massive $585 million. The Disney release has quickly become one of the biggest hits of the year.

Conversely the Supergirl experienced a disastrous opening, debuting in a distant second place with just $38 million in North American theaters and $30 million overseas. The $170 million production, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, suffered from poor reviews and tepid audience reception. This marks a significant setback for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Studios with opening numbers falling behind previous disappointments like The Flash.

Industry experts suggest this reflects a broader trend of superhero fatigue. The genre’s annual box office revenues have dropped by approximately $3.5 billion since their 2017-2019 peak with female-led superhero films experiencing particularly sharp declines.

In other box office news, the micro-budget horror phenomenon Obsession remained remarkably strong in its seventh week, taking third place with $9.8 million to reach $342.8 million globally. Paramount’s latest stunt compilation, Jackass: Best and Last, opened in fourth place with a modest $8.4 million. Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day rounded out the top five, earning $8.1 million in its third weekend.
