Foreign currency worth approximately 9.4 million taka was seized from a Dubai-bound passenger at Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport on Thursday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from Customs Intelligence, the Customs Branch, and security agencies intercepted the passenger in the departure lounge at 8:15 PM.
The airport’s Public Relations Officer, Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, confirmed the incident. He stated that law enforcement searched the hand luggage of Mohammad Abu Bakkar—a passenger scheduled on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG147—and recovered 253,665 UAE dirhams and 4,790 Omani rials.
The detained passenger, a resident of Lohagara in Chittagong, is currently held in the custody of Airport Customs and Patenga Police Station. A case under the Foreign Exchange Smuggling Act is being filed against him.
Airport authorities emphasized that strict vigilance by all airport and intelligence agencies will continue to combat foreign exchange smuggling and revenue evasion.
