Members of the terrorist "Yasin Group" opened fire on a joint force camp in the Jangal Salimpur area of Sitakunda upazila, Chittagong, early Sunday.
The attack triggered a fierce two-hour gunfight with security forces, starting at around 1:00 AM on May 24.
"The Yasin Group attacked the camp past midnight. We responded using non-lethal weapons, and the exchange of fire lasted for about two hours," said RAB-7 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Hafizur Rahman.
As the gunfight intensified, additional security forces rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The joint forces later launched a sweeping raid in the surrounding areas. While no immediate casualties or arrests have been reported, high tension prevails across the locality. Law enforcement agencies are treating the incident with maximum seriousness.
Jangal Salimpur has long been a hotspot for criminal syndicates. Since 2003, powerful groups have illegally occupied government land, forged property documents, and operated outside the law, creating a zone so volatile that even regular police forces previously hesitated to enter.
Security forces established the temporary police and RAB camps following a massive, unprecedented five-helicopter crackdown on March 9. That operation—led by RAB Director General Md. Ahsan Habib Palash—mobilized over 3,100 personnel across the Army, Police, BGB, and RAB to dismantle criminal hideouts and recover illegal arms after four previous attempts failed. Sunday's attack marks a direct retaliatory challenge by the criminal elements against that newly established security net.
