Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akhter, the prime accused in the rape and murder of seven-year-old Ramisa Akhter in the capital's Pallabi, were produced before a Dhaka court today.
Police confirmed that the investigation is complete and the charge sheet for this sensational case will be submitted on Sunday (May 24). Court sources said after the charge sheet is filed, charges will be framed against the duo today, and the case will be transferred to the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal for a speedy trial.
Currently, Sohel Rana is held in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court lockup, while his wife Swapna Akhter is in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court lockup.
Advocate Azizur Rahman Dulu, the newly appointed Special Public Prosecutor (PP), appeared in court this morning. He told reporters that all preparations are in place to file the charge sheet today and expedite the trial.
Earlier on Tuesday (May 19), police recovered the body of Ramisa, a second-grade student, from a flat in Block-B, Section-11 of Pallabi.
According to the police investigation, Sohel Rana, a resident of an adjacent flat, raped and brutally murdered the child that morning. To conceal the crime, he severed the child's head from her body. Sohel then escaped by cutting through a window grill, leaving his wife behind.
Police arrested Swapna from the flat immediately after the incident. Later that evening, using information technology, law enforcement tracked down and arrested Sohel Rana from Fatulla in Narayanganj.
The victim's father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, filed a murder and rape case with Pallabi Police Station naming the two accused. Police are submitting the charge sheet just five days after the crime occurred.
