Two children, including a 14-year-old girl who died while attempting to save another, drowned in separate incidents in Sreepur Upazila on Friday afternoon. The tragedies occurred in the Nagarhawla and Jainabazar areas, casting a deep shadow of grief over the local community.
Sweety, 14, a resident of a rented house in Dakshin Dhanua and daughter of Rafiqul Islam, died while displaying immense courage. According to local witnesses, Sweety had gone to a pond with friends to bathe. When she noticed a younger child struggling in the water, she jumped in to help. While the younger child was reportedly saved, Sweety was overwhelmed by the water. Her body was later recovered by a local farmer.
Earlier that day, at approximately 12:00 PM, six-year-old Jihad, a student at Nagarhawla Government Primary School, went missing while playing near a pond close to his home. After a frantic search, family members discovered his shoes and clothes on the bank. Locals recovered his body from the water shortly after. He was rushed to Al-Baraka Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
These incidents add to a growing number of drownings across the country this week, prompting renewed calls for increased adult supervision near open water bodies.
