Two young twin brothers were killed after being struck by a train at the Lakshmandia rail crossing in Madhukhali Upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 1:30 PM when a Bhatiapara-bound train from Rajbari hit the children near the Lakshmandia gate. Witnesses reported the impact threw the children nearly 50 yards, causing them to die instantly. The victims were the sons of Akash Sheikh, a resident of Lakshmandia village.
Following the tragedy, angry residents blocked the railway tracks to protest the lack of safety measures. Locals attributed the frequent accidents in the area to illegal structures obstructing views and the absence of a formal gate or guard at the crossing.
Azam Khan, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Madhukhali Circle), stated that police arrived to calm the situation. However, protesters blocked the same train upon its return from Bhatiapara at 4:45 PM. The blockade was eventually lifted after police and railway officials assured residents they would discuss installing a permanent gate and hiring personnel with senior authorities.
