Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) officials seized gold ornaments and foreign currency worth approximately Tk 5 crore in two separate raids at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. One outbound passenger was arrested during the operations.

Acting on a tip-off, customs officials first recovered 4 kg of gold ornaments with an estimated market value of Tk 4 crore.

In a second operation early Thursday, officials intercepted Al Amin Molla, a passenger booked on a US-Bangla Airlines flight to Bangkok. Molla, a resident of Munshiganj’s Tongibari upazila, was detained in the holding lounge after clearing initial checks.

A scan of his hand luggage revealed 485,000 Saudi Riyals and 2,110 Thai Baht. The total value of the seized currency is estimated at over Tk 1.15 crore.

The suspect is currently in custody, and legal proceedings are underway. CIID officials stated that heightened surveillance will continue to combat the smuggling of gold and illegal currency.
