A bridge built 10 years ago in Makrail village of Shalnagar union, Lohagara Upazila, Narail, at a cost of approximately Taka 19 lakh 74 thousand remains unusable due to the complete absence of connecting roads on either side.
The 24-foot bridge was constructed in the fiscal year 2015-16 under the Ministry of Disaster Management's infrastructure development project, intended to facilitate the transportation of crops from the beel (lowland) area, especially during the monsoon season.
Locals have branded the standing bridge a "poison pit," stating it offers no benefit without the connecting soil work. Villagers like Abdus Salam Molya and Limon Sikder expressed frustration over the wasted government money and the continuing difficulty in transporting crops, forcing them to take long detours.
Lohagara Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Sharif Mohammad Rubel confirmed the bridge's construction year but stated he was unaware why the connecting road was initially omitted. He promised to take immediate steps to conduct an on-site inspection and fill the sides of the bridge with soil to make it functional.
