Atletico Madrid took a massive step toward the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday, securing a clinical 2-0 first-leg victory over 10-man Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
Despite Barcelona dominating early possession and creating multiple chances, Diego Simeone’s disciplined side capitalized on a pivotal first-half red card. Goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sorloth earned Atletico their first away victory at the Catalan stadium since 2006.
Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, looked threatening in the opening stages. Forward Marcus Rashford was a constant menace down the left flank, even having a 18th-minute goal ruled out after VAR caught teammate Lamine Yamal offside in the build-up.
However, the match fundamentally shifted in the 42nd minute. Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi hauled down Giuliano Simeone as the Atletico forward raced one-on-one toward the goal. Following a VAR review at the pitchside monitor, referee Istvan Kovacs upgraded Cubarsi's initial yellow card to a straight red.
Álvarez immediately punished the hosts. In first-half stoppage time, the Argentine striker curled the resulting free-kick from 25 metres into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Joan Garcia helpless.
The stunning strike was historic—it marked Álvarez's ninth Champions League goal of the 2025/26 campaign, breaking Diego Costa's single-season club record (eight goals) set in the 2013/14 season.
To their credit, Barcelona responded bravely to going a man down. They controlled much of the ball in the second half, with Rashford coming agonizingly close to an equalizer when his free-kick struck the crossbar.
But Atletico’s rock-solid five-man defense absorbed the pressure and waited for the perfect counter-attack. In the 70th minute, Matteo Ruggeri drove down the left flank and delivered a low cross to substitute Alexander Sorloth, who swept the ball home from close range to double the visitors' lead.
Atletico comfortably saw out the remaining minutes, finishing the game with just three shots on target but punishing Barcelona with clinical efficiency.
"We’re delighted with the win, but there’s still a lot of work to be done," Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann told Movistar Plus after the match. "We need to stay calm and confident, but keep our feet on the ground."
Despite the setback, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo remains hopeful for the return leg. "We came out stronger in the second half despite being a man down; we had possession but couldn't find the net. We're disappointed with the defeat, but I think we can turn it around."
Barcelona now faces a mountain to climb when they travel to Madrid for the decisive second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium next Tuesday, April 14. The aggregate winner will advance to the semi-finals to face either Arsenal or Sporting CP.
