The first leg of the Champions League semifinal between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal ended in a 1-1 stalemate on Wednesday, leaving the tie on a knife-edge ahead of next week’s return leg in London.
In a match defined by defensive discipline and tactical adjustments, both goals came from the penalty spot. Viktor Gyökeres put Arsenal ahead in the 44th minute, firing home after being fouled by David Hancko. Atletico equalized in the 56th minute through Julián Alvarez, who converted his spot-kick following a handball by Arsenal defender Ben White.
The encounter was a sharp contrast to Tuesday’s high-scoring thriller, where defending champions Paris Saint-Germain edged Bayern Munich 5-4. In Madrid, clear-cut chances were rare. Antoine Griezmann came closest to a winner for the hosts, but his 63rd-minute effort struck the crossbar.
"Our second-half performance was much better in terms of intensity," Griezmann told reporters after the match. "Conceding just before halftime was a blow, but we adjusted our press and the fans pushed us forward. It’s going to be a nail-biter at the Emirates."
The match was not without controversy. In the 78th minute, Arsenal believed they had earned a chance to take a lead back to London when Eberechi Eze went down under a challenge from Hancko. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, ruling the contact insufficient for a penalty.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed frustration at the overturned call but noted the importance of the result. For two clubs desperate to reach a final after long absences and both seeking their first-ever European title the stakes could not be higher.
The second leg will take place at the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday, where the winner will secure a place in the showpiece final.
