Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday inaugurated a new 500-bed, 15-storey building at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINSH) in the capital. His wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman accompanied him at the 10:00am ceremony.

The new building raises NINSH's total bed capacity to 1,000, making it the largest specialised neuroscience hospital in South Asia by bed count, officials said.

After the inauguration, the prime minister planted a sapling on the hospital premises, joined a munajat and released pigeons and balloons to mark the occasion.

Social Welfare Minister Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain and other officials attended the programme.

The expanded facility is expected to strengthen specialised neurological care in Bangladesh and help meet rising patient demand.

NINSH began operations in 2012 with a 10-storey building and 300 beds. Capacity was later increased by 200 beds, and the new building now adds another 500, bringing the total to 1,000.
