Chelsea, often plagued by red cards this season, demonstrated new resilience by holding league leaders Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, despite the 38th-minute dismissal of Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo's red card for a challenge on Mikel Merino marked Chelsea's sixth sending-off in all competitions this season, and their fourth in the Premier League—double the tally of any other team, Manager Enzo Maresca, who has had his own disciplinary issue (sent off in October), instructed his players at halftime to "double the effort." This clear message seemed to galvanize the team.
Just three minutes after the restart, 10-man Chelsea took the lead when Trevoh Chalobah headed home a corner delivered by Reece James. Arsenal eventually pulled level in the 59th minute when Mikel Merino converted a cross from Bukayo Saka.
Despite their numerical advantage for over 50 minutes, Arsenal struggled to break down Chelsea. Manager Mikel Arteta introduced Martin Odegaard and Viktor Gyokeres to add firepower, but the Gunners seriously threatened only once more, with Robert Sanchez saving a late shot from Merino. The draw cuts Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points over second-placed Manchester City (25 points). Chelsea sits in third with 24 points.
Maresca praised his "outstanding" players and, when pressed on title chances, stressed the need for consistent performance at the highest level. Arteta lamented the missed opportunity, stating Arsenal "should have and could have won the game" after the Caicedo sending-off, criticizing his side for not managing to "settle the game."
