A 33-year record rainfall measuring over 400mm has deluged Chattogram, bringing the port city to a standstill and forcing the suspension of vital rail services. The downpour, triggered by an active monsoon and a depression in the Bay of Bengal, has submerged railway tracks and disrupted national commerce.
Rail Disruptions and Stranded Passengers Bangladesh Railway cancelled the Parjatak Express and the Cox’s Bazar Express after floodwaters submerged sections of the line between Sholoshahar and Janali Hat. Approximately 1,000 passengers remained stranded for nearly a day before the journeys were officially called off. Other services, including the Probal and Saikat Express, were also suspended. Affected passengers can seek refunds at the Chattogram Railway Station counter.
Impact on Commerce and Aviation The flooding has hit the country's economic heart, with export-import activities at Chattogram Port’s outer anchorage temporarily halted. Major commercial areas, including Agrabad and Chawkbazar, saw knee-to-waist-deep water enter shops and warehouses. At Shah Amanat International Airport, poor visibility and weather forced the diversion of several international and domestic flights.
Safety Alerts The Meteorological Department warns that heavy rains may continue until July 11, maintaining a high risk of landslides in hilly regions. Authorities have already relocated at least 30 families from vulnerable slopes as a precaution.
