Miscreants destroyed the only bamboo bridge leading to the newly constructed Shantiganj Press Club building in Sunamganj under the cover of darkness on Monday night.
Press Club President Sohel Talukder has filed a written complaint with the Shantiganj Police Station, urging authorities to identify the culprits and take legal action. The complaint notes that the perpetrators cut the bamboo and severed the rope ties, rendering the bridge completely unusable.
The bridge, built just days ago over a temporary road, was the sole access point for journalists and guests visiting the permanent club building. On Tuesday morning (July 7), the club's president and general secretary discovered the damage while visiting the adjacent Muktijoddha Complex.
Outraged press club members visited the scene, describing the act as a premeditated attack. Club Advisor Kazi Mohammad Jamirul Islam Momtaz stated that destroying the access path to a journalistic organization is more than property damage—it is a deliberate attempt to disrupt a vital social institution. He demanded a fair investigation and swift legal action.
In a joint statement, President Talukder and General Secretary Hossain Ahmed strongly condemned the nighttime sabotage and urged the local administration to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Shantiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aliullah confirmed receiving the written complaint. "Based on the complaint, necessary legal action will be taken after a thorough investigation," he said.
The Shantiganj Press Club has long played a crucial role in promoting objective journalism and public awareness in the region. This attack, occurring shortly after the club began operating from its new permanent building, has sparked widespread concern and anger among local journalists and citizens.
