Lionel Messi orchestrated a spectacular 3-2 comeback victory for Argentina against Egypt in the World Cup last-16 on Tuesday. The dramatic win advances the defending champions to the quarterfinals and pushes Messi to the top of the Golden Boot race.
Trailing 2-0 with just 11 minutes of regular time remaining, Argentina seemed destined for a shock exit. Egypt took an early lead through a Yasser Ibrahim header in the 15th minute. Despite relentless Argentine pressure, which included a saved penalty from Messi and brilliant stops by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir, Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute with a sweeping counter-attack finished by Mostafa Zico.
However, the 39-year-old Argentina captain sparked a stunning late turnaround. Messi assisted Cristian Romero’s header in the 79th minute to cut the deficit, before smashing home the equalizer just four minutes later. The dramatic winner arrived deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez headed in a clinical cross from Lautaro Martinez.
Messi’s crucial equalizer marked his eighth goal of this tournament and his 21st overall in World Cup history. The strike also extended his unprecedented scoring streak to nine consecutive World Cup matches, moving him ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot standings.
Argentina survives a massive scare and will now face either Colombia or Switzerland in Saturday's quarterfinal in Kansas City.
