In Bhurungamari of Kurigram, a group of frustrated farmers broke open the door of a fertilizer dealer’s warehouse and took away 197 sacks of urea fertilizer, reportedly after failing to obtain fertilizer.
The incident took place around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (August 23) at the M/s Shah Amanat dealer point in Shilkhuri Union.
According to local sources, more than 200 farmers had gathered at the dealer point since morning to purchase fertilizer. After waiting for a long time without the dealer opening the premises, tensions escalated. At one point, the farmers broke open the warehouse door, entered the facility and began taking fertilizer.
Police from Bhurungamari Police Station arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control, while protecting the remaining fertilizer in the warehouse.
Local farmers alleged that Taifur Rahman Mukul, owner of Shah Amanat Traders, had received an allocation of 1,320 sacks but had been delaying distribution. Around 340 sacks were reportedly stocked at the warehouse.
Bhurungamari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Azimuddin said the fertilizer requirement in Shilkhuri Union is around 4,000 sacks, against an allocation of only 1,320 sacks. The actual amount lifted was even lower, creating fears among farmers that they would not receive fertilizer.
He said the farmers took 197 sacks from the warehouse. Following police intervention, 33 farmers returned 33 sacks, and efforts are underway to recover the remaining fertilizer.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Jabbar said he would comment later when contacted by phone.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amrit Debnath said he was attending a district-level meeting throughout the day and was therefore unaware of the incident.
