The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has filed an official complaint with FIFA following a controversial 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16.
Despite leading 2-0 until the 79th minute, Egypt saw the defending champions mount a late three-goal comeback to secure a quarter-final spot.
The EFA’s protest focuses on several "unjust" decisions made by French referee François Letexier. Key grievances include a disallowed goal by Mostafa Ziko after a VAR review and a late penalty appeal involving Mohamed Salah that the EFA claims was ignored by officials.
The Egyptian camp also questioned the match's disciplinary record. Egypt received five yellow cards and saw a member of their coaching staff sent off, while Argentina finished the game without a single booking. Furthermore, head coach Hossam Hassan was booked during the match after making what the EFA described as an "anti-racism gesture" toward the referee.
A furious Hassan later labeled the match "rigged," alleging his side was cheated. He also criticized the 12:00 PM kickoff time and the pressure Argentinian players reportedly placed on the officiating crew. FIFA has not yet issued a response to the complaint. Argentina is now scheduled to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
