Police have arrested four individuals in Tajumuddin, Bhola, after a viral video showed a man and a woman being publicly humiliated with shoe garlands for refusing to pay extortion money.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 6) when victims Shahe Alam and Taslima Begum (50) were visiting a local Union Parishad member’s house for personal matters. A group of men, led by local criminal Sajib, cornered them, falsely accused them of "anti-social activities," and demanded an extortion payment of 1 lakh taka.
When the victims refused to pay, the gang physically assaulted them, forced shoe garlands around their necks, and harassed them in public. The perpetrators recorded the humiliation and circulated the video on social media.
Following the incident, Shahe Alam filed a case at the Tajumuddin Police Station against nine named suspects and several unidentified individuals. Police swiftly conducted a raid and arrested the primary accused, Sajib (28), along with Rakib Bhutto, Raihan (19), and Russell (21).
Locals report that Sajib is a notorious criminal and the former second-in-command of the regional 'Dulal Bahini' pirate gang. He faces six prior cases, including robbery, and was previously accused of brutally assaulting a woman in 2025.
Tajumuddin Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed that the four suspects have been sent to jail through the court. "Prompt action was taken immediately after the case was filed, and operations are actively underway to apprehend the remaining culprits," he stated.
