Heavy rainfall and flash floods from upstream hills have pushed three major rivers in Bandarban—the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali—above their danger levels. The rising waters have inundated low-lying areas of Bandarban town, severely disrupting road and river transport.
Currently, more than 100 tourists are stranded in remote areas of Thanchi upazila. Adverse weather has suspended all river communication with Thanchi and Ruma, while several landslides have blocked connecting roads, making rescue efforts difficult.
In response to the escalating risk, the district administration has banned travel to all tourist destinations in Bandarban until Friday. Deputy Commissioner Md Saniul Ferdous issued the notice Monday night, emphasizing the danger of further landslides.
Authorities are actively conducting awareness campaigns in high-risk areas to prevent casualties. To support affected residents, 220 cyclone and flood shelters have been opened, and eight medical teams are prepared to provide emergency healthcare. Officials urge the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions stabilize.
