BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute to the party's founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, on his 45th martyrdom anniversary today.
At around 11:00 AM, the Prime Minister placed a floral wreath at Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. He was accompanied by BNP Standing Committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salah Uddin Ahmed, and Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, alongside dozens of senior party leaders.
The leaders stood in solemn silence to honor the late president before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman joined a special doa mahfil (prayer session) at the graveyard.
Ziaur Rahman was assassinated at the Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981. The BNP observes this date annually as 'Martyrdom Day.'
To mark the occasion, national and black flags were hoisted, and party flags were lowered to half-mast at dawn across BNP offices nationwide, including the Naya Paltan central office and the Chairman's Gulshan office. Throughout the morning, various associate bodies—including the Dhaka North and South city units, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, and other professional wings—also placed wreaths at the mausoleum.
The tribute is part of an eight-day program launched by the BNP on May 25. As part of the observance, a discussion meeting will be held tomorrow at 2:30 PM at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium. Furthermore, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed that Chairman Tarique Rahman will personally oversee the distribution of clothes and dry food packages at 17 locations across Dhaka.
