Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram stated on Saturday that firmly establishing a democratic system based on the nationalist ideals of Ziaur Rahman will transform Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous state.
Speaking to journalists at the Bhola District BNP office on Saturday morning, the newly elected Speaker noted that the nation remembers the late President Ziaur Rahman with deep respect on his 45th death anniversary. He emphasized that democracy is the primary engine of national growth, expressing confidence that the ruling party and its allies would continue to steer the country toward major economic progress.
"Though President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated prematurely, his nationalist ideology remains the guiding framework for governing Bangladesh today," Speaker Hafiz Uddin said. He highlighted the enduring popularity of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, noting that her relentless struggle against authoritarianism over the last 16 years successfully restored the country's democratic structure.
He further observed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is carrying forward the nation-building legacy of his parents, citing newly initiated state reforms as proof of that continuity. Reflecting on Ziaur Rahman's international contributions, the Speaker recalled how his diplomatic acumen earned him a seat on the Al-Quds Committee, bringing immense prestige to Bangladesh by allowing him to mediate conflicts within the Muslim world.
Bhola District Council Administrator Golam Nabi Alamgir and senior leaders of the BNP and its front organizations were present during the press briefing.
