Dhaka’s two city corporations are gearing up for a massive sanitation drive during Eid-ul-Azha, setting an ambitious target to clear sacrificial animal waste within eight hours.
Slashing last year’s 12-hour timeframe, authorities plan to deploy thousands of sanitation workers and specialized vehicles to handle the expected surge in refuse. With Eid-ul-Azha scheduled for May 28, 2026, officials estimate around 700,000 animals will be sacrificed across the capital, generating nearly 50,000 tonnes of waste over the three-day festival.
DSCC Cleanup Operations
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam confirmed that full-scale cleaning will launch at 12:00 PM on Eid day.
A total workforce of 12,853 personnel and nearly 2,080 vehicles—including dump trucks, compactors, and loaders—will manage the waste.
To aid citizens, the DSCC is distributing 140,000 biodegradable bags, 45 tonnes of bleaching powder, and 207 gallons of Savlon antiseptic.
To discourage unsanitary street slaughtering, four to five designated spots equipped with temporary sheds have been established in every ward.
DNCC Cleanup Operations
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has tailored its strategy using data from last year's successful rapid-evacuation model.
The DNCC is distributing 1.63 million heavy-duty polybags alongside 3,600 sacks (25kg each) of bleaching powder. Their logistics fleet features 261 internal vehicles and 405 hired dumpers and loaders.
At least 1,000 professional meat processors and Imams have received formal training to assist across 54 municipal wards.
Backed by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), temporary veterinary camps will monitor animal health at makeshift cattle markets. Special mobile courts will actively patrol to ensure leaseholders comply with municipal hygiene guidelines.
Both city corporations will monitor the entire operation via central control rooms and localized zonal committees to ensure Dhaka remains clean throughout the holiday.
