Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan stated on Wednesday that maintaining social and political stability remains the nation's primary challenge.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 'Islamic Competition 2026' in Uttara, the Minister noted that past political instability and divisive rhetoric had previously disrupted the environment for religious and educational gatherings. The event was organized by local MP SM Jahangir Hossain at the Uttara Community Center.
Swapan criticized previous regimes that lacked a popular mandate, accusing them of using social division as a political strategy. He highlighted that under such administrations, religious identities—including traditional attire and practices—were often viewed with unnecessary suspicion, undermining Bangladesh’s long-standing culture of harmony.
"The people of Bangladesh have a centuries-old tradition of peaceful coexistence," the Minister said. "Islam and all other religions teach respect for others' beliefs. There is no room for conflict in our society."
He emphasized that competitions like these foster logic, talent, and moral education among madrasa students. Swapan concluded by calling on religious scholars and leaders to act as key partners in promoting peace and compassion across the country.
Local MP SM Jahangir Hossain, Baitul Mukarram Khatib Allama Mufti Abdul Malek, and other dignitaries were also in attendance.
