The government has increased the prices of sacrificial animal hide ahead of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha.

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir announced the revised prices at a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon after a meeting on the management of sacrificial animal-related activities.

According to the Commerce Ministry, the price of salted cowhide in Dhaka has been fixed at Tk 62 to Tk 67 per square foot this year. Outside Dhaka, the price has been set at Tk 57 to Tk 62 per square foot.

Last year, salted cowhide prices were Tk 60 to Tk 65 in Dhaka and Tk 55 to Tk 60 outside the capital. As a result, prices have increased by Tk 2 per square foot this year.

The government has also fixed the price of khasi skin at Tk 25 to Tk 30 per square foot and goat skin at Tk 22 to Tk 25 per square foot across the country.

The Commerce Minister said the government has taken steps to prevent sacrificial skins from being damaged due to poor preservation. Salt will be distributed through district and upazila administrations to support proper preservation at the field level.

He also said traders and madrasa representatives have already received training on preserving animal skins correctly. The government will spend around Tk 20 crore on training and nationwide salt distribution.

The minister said law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain on high alert to prevent leather smuggling during Eid-ul-Azha. He added that the government aims to strengthen the domestic leather industry through coordinated efforts and directed field-level officials to ensure proper collection and preservation of sacrificial skins.
