Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hossain said the measles situation in Bangladesh is coming under control due to coordinated efforts.
“With everyone’s support, we are managing to control measles. We have consulted many doctors and also held discussions with a Chinese medical team,” he said.
The minister made these remarks as chief guest at the inauguration of the National Nutrition Week 2026 held at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Thursday (April 23).
Recalling his childhood, the minister said measles used to be considered a common illness. “There was a belief that every child would get measles and chickenpox once,” he added.
He urged health workers to strengthen awareness campaigns, emphasizing that “there is no alternative to mother’s breast milk.”
The minister expressed concern over declining breastfeeding rates, noting that many mothers are moving away from the practice. He also warned about the health risks associated with unnecessary cesarean sections, which may affect a newborn’s physical resilience.
Addressing nutrition workers, he said, “Those who visit homes should encourage mothers to breastfeed their children.”
