Govt Increases House Rent Allowance for MPO-Listed Teachers

Amid ongoing protests by teachers, the Bangladesh government has announced an increase in house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions.

The Finance Division issued a circular on Sunday, signed by Mitu Mariam, Deputy Secretary of the Regulation-3 Branch under the Division’s Regulation Wing.

According to the circular, teachers and staff under MPO (Monthly Pay Order) will now receive house rent allowance at 5% of their basic salary, with a minimum of Tk 2,000, effective from November 1, 2025.

The order includes several conditions, such as compliance with existing MPO policies, adherence to financial regulations, and no payment of arrears. It also states that any irregularities in payment will be the responsibility of the disbursing authority.

However, teacher associations have rejected the move, saying the increase is inadequate. They continue to demand a 20% raise in house rent allowance.
