The 127th birth anniversary of Bangladesh's National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, was celebrated in Gopalganj with a vibrant array of cultural programs, discussion seminars and a literary publication ceremony.
The event was organized jointly by the Gopalganj District Administration and the District Shilpakala Academy at the academy auditorium on Monday (May 25). Government officials, cultural personalities, teachers, students, and citizens from various professions gathered to pay tribute to the legendary literary icon.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate of Gopalganj, Md. Ariful Uz Zaman, attended the celebration as the chief guest.
In his keynote address, DC Ariful Uz Zaman highlighted the timeless relevance of the poet's philosophy. "National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was not only our 'Rebel Poet' but also a shining symbol of humanity, equality, and secular values," he stated. He emphasized the critical need to expand Nazrul studies and foster active cultural engagement among the younger generation to protect inclusive social values.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gopalganj, Md. Habibullah, attended the program as the special guest. Mirroring the chief guest's sentiments, the SP spoke on how the poet's works continue to inspire patriotism. "The ideals of our National Poet play a vital role in establishing justice, equality, and humanitarian values in society. We must encourage youth to embrace these principles by reading and practicing Nazrul's literature," he noted.
A key highlight of the celebration was the official unveiling of the book "Halkhata", published to mark the occasion.
Following the book launch, the District Shilpakala Academy hosted a cultural show featuring local artists. The performances brought Nazrul’s diverse creative portfolio to life through moving renditions of Nazrul Sangeet (Nazrul songs), poetry recitations, and traditional dance performances.
The day-long celebration concluded with a prize distribution ceremony honoring the student winners of various literary, recitation, and art competitions held ahead of the anniversary.
