The Information and Broadcasting Adviser, Md. Mahfuj Alam, stated today that women's participation across various sectors in Bangladesh has increased significantly following the "July mass uprising."
Mahfuj made these remarks while addressing an event titled "Women in establishing democracy: What we have gained," organized by Women in Democracy at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) auditorium.
He expressed optimism that over the next five years, women will integrate into mainstream politics in larger numbers. Mahfuj described Bangladeshi society as a complex interplay of religion, tradition, legal frameworks, and modernity, emphasizing that understanding this intersection is crucial for building social consensus and effective paths for women's empowerment. He noted that the history of Bangladeshi women spans a continuous 150-year trajectory that must be properly addressed.
The Adviser stressed that the government alone cannot implement policies; rather, active involvement from political parties, institutions, and civil society is essential. He called for ensuring open spaces for political parties to participate actively in policy formulation and implementation.
The event featured a wide range of prominent speakers, including Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, human rights activist Shahidul Alam, Professor Dilara Chowdhury, Gano Sanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki, and representatives from various political and civil society groups.
