Sudden changes in weather have led to a rise in seasonal illnesses among children, doctors and health officials say. Many children are suffering from colds, coughs, fever, diarrhoea, and respiratory problems, prompting experts to urge parents to be extra cautious.

Hospitals are seeing a sharp increase in child patients. At Dr. Zahed Memorial Children’s Hospital, the only specialised children’s hospital in Faridpur, parents were seen waiting for hours with sick children.

Md Akkas Mondal, administrative officer of the hospital, said around 250 to 300 children are visiting the outpatient department daily, far higher than usual. He added that the inpatient wards are also facing a shortage of beds almost every day.

Doctors say fluctuating temperatures, dust, and viral infections weaken children’s immunity, making them more vulnerable to illness. Common cases include cold, pneumonia, fever, and diarrhoea.

Pediatrician Dr Niranjan Kumar Das of the hospital said children are falling ill more frequently during this period. “Many are coming in with cough, fever, and breathing difficulties. Parents should pay close attention to hygiene, nutrition, and clean food,” he said.

Health experts advise parents to dress children according to the weather, ensure they drink safe water, and provide nutritious meals. They also recommend seeking medical care promptly if symptoms appear.

Several parents at the hospital said their children developed fever and cough after the weather changed, forcing them to seek treatment. Many complained about long waiting times due to the high patient load.

Faridpur Civil Surgeon Dr Mahmudul Hasan said awareness is key to reducing the risk of seasonal diseases. He urged parents to take extra care of children during weather changes and seek early treatment. “The government has issued special instructions to hospitals in the district. There is no shortage of doctors or medicines,” he said.

Experts say parental awareness remains the most effective way to keep children healthy during seasonal transitions.
