Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed it is reviewing "new proposals" from the United States delivered via the Pakistani Army Chief acting as a mediator.
Despite the new diplomatic opening Tehran maintains a firm stance stating its negotiators will not make "the slightest compromise" regarding national interests.
In Washington US President Donald Trump acknowledged that "very good conversations" are happening but accused Iran of attempted "blackmail" over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump asserted that the US would maintain a tough position and expected to provide further updates by the end of the day.
The diplomatic efforts come amid a dangerous escalation in the Gulf. India has summoned Iran’s ambassador after two Indian-flagged oil tankers reportedly came under fire while attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expressed "deep concern" and urged Tehran to ensure the safe passage of India-bound vessels.
While a 50-day blockade of the Strait was briefly lifted on Friday allowing over a dozen tankers to pass Iran reportedly reimposed restrictions on Saturday.
While President Trump suggested an agreement to keep the waterway open had been reached, Iranian officials continue to demand a full lift of the US blockade on Iranian tankers.
Western shipping companies remain cautious citing concerns over maritime safety and the potential presence of sea mines.
