A high-level US delegation, including Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, arrived in Islamabad on Saturday to negotiate a formal ceasefire with Iran. The visit follows the arrival of a high-powered Iranian delegation earlier this morning as Pakistan mediates a "make-or-break" summit to end six weeks of conflict.
The Iranian team, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the Secretary of the Defense Council, and the Governor of the Central Bank. According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, the delegation will first consult with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before formal proceedings begin.
The negotiations, scheduled to take place at the Serena Hotel, aim to solidify a fragile two-week truce announced by US President Donald Trump on April 7. Key issues on the table include the permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, and the potential inclusion of the Lebanon conflict in the peace framework.
Security in the capital has been placed on high alert, with thousands of paramilitary troops deployed to ensure the safety of the visiting officials. While US Vice President JD Vance is also expected to join the talks, the presence of Kushner and Witkoff signals Washington's intent to reach a swift diplomatic resolution to the regional energy and security crisis.
