Intermittent heavy rains, triggered by a low-pressure system, have raised the threat of dangerous landslides in Chittagong. In response, the district administration is actively broadcasting public warnings to evacuate residents from vulnerable hill areas.
Loudspeaker announcements began Sunday night and intensified on Monday morning (July 6). The administration has prepared nearby schools, colleges, mosques, and madrasas to serve as emergency shelters for displaced residents.
Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah stated that the Meteorological Department has issued local cautionary signal number 3.
"It has been raining since Saturday night, significantly increasing the risk of landslides. To protect lives and property, we are urging people living in risky hill settlements to move to shelters immediately," the Deputy Commissioner said.
Six teams, led by Assistant Commissioners (Land), are directly overseeing the evacuation efforts. Relocation operations are currently underway in Akbarshah Jheel (areas 1, 2, and 3), Bijoynagar Pahar, Shantinagar Pahar, and Beltalighona Pahar.
Local officials have confirmed widespread warnings across multiple high-risk zones:
Chandgaon Circle: Assistant Commissioner Plaban Kumar Biswas reported that warnings are active around Tankir Pahar, Amin Jute Mill, Paharika, Samabaya Abasik, Mia Pahar, and the Muradpur Railway hill.
Baklia Circle: Assistant Commissioner Shifat Binte Ara confirmed evacuation orders for the Motijharna hills. Riverbank residents in the Baklia area have also been alerted to seek safe shelter.
Agrabad Circle: Assistant Commissioner Tanvir Hasan Turan stated that residents in Lalkhan Bazar Pora Colony, Dhebarpar, Ambagan, and coastal communities near Uttar Halishahar have been explicitly instructed to vacate their homes.
