To address the escalating impacts of climate change in coastal communities, the Ma Sangsad (Mother Parliament) held a strategic meeting with Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Habibullah on Tuesday morning at the DORP office in Morelganj.
Chaired by Ma Sangsad Speaker Shaibya Dakuar, the session focused heavily on the region's acute shortage of safe drinking water. Deputy Speaker Shefali Akhter Rakhi, Momtaz Begum, and other members presented a comprehensive overview of local challenges. They urged the Upazila administration to coordinate with government and private agencies to resolve issues regarding sanitation, prolonged waterlogging, river erosion, and damaged communication infrastructure.
The delegation also demanded the restoration of khas (government-owned) ponds and the expansion of social safety net programs to protect vulnerable residents.
In response, UNO Habibullah assured the representatives that the administration would take phased action. He committed to prioritizing the Ma Sangsad’s proposed initiatives using budget allocations from the upcoming fiscal year.
During the meeting, the Ma Sangsad submitted a formal list of recommendations and invited the UNO to serve as an advisor to their platform. Accepting the role, Habibullah praised the women’s civic leadership and pledged his continued support during his tenure in the Upazila.
The UNO concluded by commending the Development Organization of the Rural Poor (DORP) for its timely interventions. He emphasized that the safe water projects currently implemented by DORP, in collaboration with local platforms, are critical lifelines for resolving the region's most severe crisis.
