The government is actively working to guarantee press freedom in Bangladesh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan announced Thursday.
Speaking at a workshop to draft the National Media Commission's outline at Dhaka's Hotel Intercontinental, Swapan emphasized the government's role as a coordinator in the ongoing democratic reform process. He noted that bringing all media stakeholders onto a single platform for the first time will have a lasting positive impact and help establish a clear roadmap for the future.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury added that responsible, constructive journalism is essential to this process. Acknowledging that no one is above errors, he encouraged the media to highlight the government's mistakes and shortcomings to create opportunities for course correction.
